About Ethnomusicology
In Action

Ethnomusicology In Action is a program of Themba Arts and Culture that has the purpose of empowering African American children through cultural programs. Ethnomusicology is an academic discipline that studies music as culture. Our programs put academic research in this field to action by using research on African and African American culture and music to instill in African American children a strong and historically rooted cultural identity.

We offer three key programs.

The Ethnomusicology In Action Curriculum Project, a comprehensive professional development program for music educators, that trains them to use music and other disciplines to reinforce a strong, historically rooted cultural identity in African American children.

The Drinking Gourd Festival engages children who attend public schools in Washington DC to perform songs and create murals that celebrate the legacy of the Underground Railroad.

Making A Movement Summer Arts Workshop teaches middle school and early high school students about five major social justice movements through the lens of music and the arts.

Maya Cunningham is the Ethnomusicologist and Cultural Activist who founded and directs Ethnomusicology in Action as a program of Themba Arts and Culture, a 501 (c) 3 tax exempt not-for-profit organization.
