About Music of Botswana: Gateway to Southern Africa
The Music of Botswana: Gateway to Southern Africa curriculum allows students to gain an intricate
understanding of traditional music and culture in Botswana, and serves as a window into cousin cultures in Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho. Music in Botswana is intricately tied to cultural values, social institutions and the topography of the country. Through hands on activities, students will learn key traditional music customs and how they express Botswanan culture. Students will learn to sing traditional songs associated with life cycle events, like baby naming ceremonies and weddings, and songs associated with annual events, like the harvest celebration and the leadership of traditional kings. Students will also children’s games and songs as well as songs that are closely connected with Botswanan cultural values, like family roles, respect for elders, and community connectedness. Students will create replicas of traditional Botswanan instruments and learn about the history and culture of the country by engaging in read-out-louds of a robust collection of children’s books.
This curriculum will be available for the 2022-2023 school year.
Each Ethnomusicology in Action Curriculum includes detailed teacher’s guides, step by step lesson plans, sheet music, printed and online children’s books with narration, online videos, downloadable music recordings, accompaniment tracks for performances and scholarly background readings for educators.
