Travel Logistics For Ghana
International travel is very exciting, but involves extensive logistical planning. Additionally traveling, to our African homeland also involves special preparation. Please read the information below regarding travel to Ghana. This information is general, but is geared towards participants who are traveling from the United States and other Western countries.
Air Travel
We strongly urge you to purchase your flight to Ghana as soon as possible. Prices tend to rise the closer to a departure date. If you intend to register, please consider also purchasing your flight as soon as possible to get the lowest price possible. The airport of arrival and departure in Ghana is in Accra. The airport code is "ACC," populary known as Kotoka International Airport. Transatlantic ocean travel is exciting but tends to be long. Plan to bring snacks and entertainment (books, music etc.). International flights typically offer movies.
*Please plan to arrive in Ghana on Saturday July 18th. For some flights, this might require departure on the evening of Friday July 17th. The group will depart by bus for the Volta Region on the morning of Sunday July 19th.
Websites like orbitz.com, travelocity.com and others offer excellent rates. However, please make sure you read their policies regarding luggage allowances and flight changes. Airlines have become more strict about luggage weights for international flights.

Travel Vaccinations
Travel vaccinations are required for entry into Ghana. Documentation of yellow fever vaccination is required. Other vaccinations are recommended. Travel vaccinations are covered by many health insurance plans. We strongly urge you to make an appointment as soon as possible for your travel vaccinations. Visa Information
When you register, we will contact you about the visa application process. Please do not wait until the last minute to secure your visa to Ghana. Single entry permit visas are valid for only 3 months (90 days) from the date of issue.
- Regular service single entry visas are $60 dollars and a multiple entry visa is $100 dollars.
- Expedited service single entry visas are $100 dollars and a multiple entry visa is $200
dollars.
A passport is required. Please keep in mind that if you do not live near the Ghanaian Embassy in Washington DC or a Ghanaian Consulate/High Commission, you will have to apply through mail. Click here for more visa information from the Ghanaian Embassy.

US Passport
Please do not delay in securing a current US Passport. Regular processing time is six to eight weeks. If you do not have a current passport, please begin the process as soon as possible. Click here for US Passport information.
Travel Insurance
All Ghana Summer 2020 participants are required to have travel insurance. It is possible to purchase travel insurance for the dates of your trip. Travel insurance is relatively inexpensive (less than $50 dollars). We will share more information with participants closer to our departure date.
Other Considerations
Clothing
We will be in Ghana during the rainy season. The temperature is comparable to the summer on the East Coast of the US. There are sometimes rain showers in the afternoons. Please bring loose, comfortable clothes.
Also, Ghana is famous for its tailoring tradition. Many visitors are very enthusiastic to have special clothing items made. Please budget for this possibility - the prices are very inexpensive compared to US prices.
Bringing Items Back Home
There will be many rare, unique and beautiful items to purchase in Ghana. Please keep in mind the weight allowance of your luggage. You might consider bringing an extra, large empty suitcase for your purchases. Also, please consider budgeting for shipping your special purchases back home. Our team will help you to coordinate shipping.
